More 2012 dates added, WEC and LMS series!

The Motorsport Calendar App has been updated, current version now 0.9.7.1. It has undergone a performance improvement a general tidy up and 2012 dates added as they are confirmed and published by the relevant championship organisers.

For 2012 we also promise extra improvements above just adding the 2012 dates... Stay tuned! These are planned for inclusion in the first few months of next year.

It may be necessary to do a Cache clearance after installing the latest version, to pick up all of the updates correctly.

Weekend in Motorsport (19/20 October 2011)

We start this week with the Los Angeles Motor Show, and the pre-launch of the future trackday hero the Subaru BRZ which is claiming to be impressively lightweight for a car from a mainstream manufacturer.

The NASCAR boys are down in Homestead, Florida where it seems bringing ice into the grandstand is a capital offence.

Looking Forward... Event of the Week
The East African Safari Classic Rally starts in Mombasa ("...in a bar room drinking gin") before a hoard of classic rally cars head around Kenya and Tanzania (including the lower slopes of Kilamanjaro and wildlife havens of the Ngorogoro Crater).

Don't forget to support the excellent Micro-Finance cause being promoted by Race4Change.

Looking Even Further Forward...
The FIA World Endurance Championship 2012 calendar dates have been announced (visible on your favourite Android application shortly) with the headlines seeming to highlight the absence of the Petit Le Mans from the schedule.

Also across the pond, could this be the first good looking Daytona Prototype?

Looking Back...
It goes without saying that everyone who's seen an episode of The Dukes of Hazzard knows the origins of NASCAR racing are the back roads of Moonshine country.

One of the better pieces of journalism on the subject is Tom Wolfe's legendary story "Last American Hero" chronicaling the life of Junior Johnson. It is available alongside the eponymous tale of custom car pioneers 'Big Daddy' Ed Roth and George Barris in the Kandy-kolored Tangerine-flake Streamline Baby

Weekend in Motorsport (12/13 October 2011)

The Lame Duck F1 season heads to Abu Dhabi this weekend and no-one will care when Seb Vettel roars off into the distance . The only interest the weekend could generate is if any 2012 driver line-up rumours emerge.

Another Not As Good As It Used To Be event is the Rally GB in Wales. The current "TV Friendly" weekend WRC rounds are a pale imitation of the week-long marathons of the past. The MSC Crew as motorsport obsessives will argue to anyone who'll listen that a return to lengthier events would work perfectly now fans have access to modern tools such as online timing, videos and social media such as Twitter. Armchair fans can follow the progress of rallies from their office desks or mobile phones and then catch up on nightly highlights online or on tv before the final stages are broadcast live on a weekend. This will allow A Story to build and interest to be generated by chatter on forums etc.

Looking Forward... Event of the Week
The ILMC is in China this weekend for a 6hr race. With China becoming a major market for auto makers expect it to feature on every worldwide series calendar from now on.

The good people of Audi TV will be broadcasting video of the whole race which can be combined with excellent commentary (and forum discussion) from Radio Le Mans and (free!) reportage from DailySportscar.com.

The race takes place in the early hours of Sunday morning for those of us in Europe.

Looking Forward... 2012
As the supermarket shelves start filling with mince pies and discounted booze it is time to look forward to 2012. The Motorsport Calendar Android Application's next release (available on the Android Market shortly) will include the first batch 2012 dates for series such as F1, Grand-Am, British GT and the Le Mans 24hrs. As more dates are officially announced by series in the New Year and these will be added to the application, so keep downloading the new versions as updates appear on your phone.

The first event of 2012 is The Dakar Rally which is again in South America rather than its traditional home of North Africa. The 2012 route takes in Argentina, Chile and Peru.

The truck category has a large number of Dutch entrant and the leading De Rooy team have launched their 2012 challenger and updated website: http://www.dakar-derooy.com/2012/

Looking Back...
Porsche's annual Rennsport Reunion IV at California's Laguna Seca raceway is a celebration of their long and glorious racing heritage.

Porsche Announcement of the Week...
Whilst Audi and Peugeot have contested the headline class in ACO regulated events in recent years the traditional sportscar battle has always been Porsche vs Ferrari. The Maranello Mob have had the advantage recently but Porsche's 2012 911 RSR should redress the balance: Story and Pictures from SpeedHunters.com

Motorsport Commentator Paul Truswell has written an excellent piece on why (in his words) Sportscar racing is more worthy than Formula One.

Weekend in Motorsport (5/6 November 2011)

Looking Forward... Event of the Week
The Motorsport Calendar's local event the Tempest Rally takes place amongst the army's various pieces of woodlands in the north eastern Hampshire area.

Looking Back...
Back in the '79-'80 season 12 British BMW dealerships ran identical BMW 323i's, all prepared by Tom Walkinshaw Racing in a one make series in support of the Aurora F1 series. Pedalled by a stellar cast of drivers (vaguely associated with the county 'sponsoring' each car) including Martin Brundle, Win Percy, Mrs Needell's boy Timothy, Frank Synter and Derek Bell.

Good Cause of the Week...
Raising money for MicroFinance projects, Race4Change will be running a Tuthill prepped 911 in the East African Classic Rally in a couple of week's time. Microfinance is an excellent way of empowering communities and a modest donation goes a long way to improve people's lives.

Another dark week for motorsport fans, so we begin with a Tribute to Marco Simoncelli.

Looking Forward... Event of the Week

The Formula One circus heads to India for the first time. RedBull have marked the occasion by driving on the World's Highest Road.

Looking Back...

The Bridge to Gantry site has another interesting video from the VLN series at the Nurburgring, this time featuring former Ring-Taxi pilote Sabine Schmitz 'enjoying' a lap in the rain.

Competition of the Week...
James Allen has yet another excellent prize on offer on his well respected site.

Included in the current release (updated in the official Android Market) are the Le Mans 24 heures, the Le Mans Classic and the Formula One dates for 2012. These are the only Motorsport dates that are currently confirmed. Once other Championships confirm their dates the App. will be updated.

Weekend in Motorsport (22/23 October 2011)

After a difficult, soul-searching week for the motor racing community, it is right and fitting to firstly link to Marshal Pruett's tribute article to Dan Wheldon

To lighten the mood before getting back to business, here are some low brow motoring themed music videos from Mighty Car Mods off of Australia and then the Rubberbandits off of Ireland.

Looking Forward... Event of the Week

Dan Wheldon was due to co-drive in the Gold Coast 600 in another classic V8 Supercars event where series regulars are paired up with a Who's-Who of Top Name International Drivers. Darren Turner takes Wheldon's seat.

Looking Back...

Friday 30 September 2011

Weekend in Motorsport (01/02 October 2011)

We're approaching the end of the motor racing season here in the northern hemisphere, but there's another action packed weekend ahead of us.

This week's main events are the Petit Le Mans from Road Atlanta and the Britcar 24 Hours from Silverstone.

The PLM sees the stateside return of Audi and Peugeot after sitting out most of the ALMS races this season.

Axis Of Oversteer: Lap Road Atlanta with BMW's Dirk Warner

Also returning to the driving seat is former Le Mans GT2 winner Justin Bell. He's normally to be found at ALMS races as SPEED tv's pitlane pundit but will be joining the AF Corse team to pedal their GT-class Ferrari.

Bell has long been a contributor to the online videos at Jay Leno's Garage and has just started a new series of videos for eBay Motors entitled World's Fastest Car Show.

Silverstone in October is usually a wet and windy affair but the UK is currently experiencing a bit of an Indian Summer so this weekend's Britcar 24hrs will be a sun drenched affair for a change.

Previous runnings of the race have seen length Safety Car periods and even Red Flags overnight due to mist and fog, so perhaps this year will see an uninterrupted run from Flag-to-Flag.

To remind yourself of last year's event, check out the following lengthy documentary:

Weekend in Motorsport (17/18 September 2011)

Now then Sportsfans,

Goodwood revival is the pick of bunch. It's a complete sell out, no general admission tickets are available. From the website "An unusual form of pedal power will take to the famous Goodwood motor circuit at this week’s Revival when the Baker Boys RAF Bicycle Display Team ride on the track in perfect formation.". It promises, as always to transport race goers back to the sixties. They are also celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the Supermarine Spitfire - "On Sunday 18th September up to 12 Spitfires will take to the skies with a spectacular display as the Band of Royal Marines and RAF Choir perform on the motor circuit and airfield below."

Aussie V8 Supercars visit Phillip Island, Melbourne for a 500 kilometre race. It sees the start of the 'Endurance Season' where the 28 regular drivers team up with a co-driver.. Which should promise to mix things up a little!

Indycar is visiting the Motegi circuit in Japan. Can Will Power complete a hat trick of wins after topping the podium at Baltimore & Sonoma? "More than 420,000 pounds of cargo and 1,525 tires shipped to Japan, where it's unloaded at Twin Ring Motegi"

DTM returns back to Germany, after racing at Brands Hatch, and goes to Oschersleben. "In the past three years, the previous championship leader never succeeded in winning at Oschersleben. While the winner of the Oschersleben round always secured the title, in the end: Timo Scheider in 2008 and 2009, Paul Di Resta in 2010." Which should make things interesting as the top two are separated by a single point! Audi have unveiled their new A5 DTM car, at the Frankfurt Motorshow, which looks fast.

I don't read many of the motorsport magazines, but have been reading "No Angel". For those who don't know it's a biography by Tom Bowers about Bernie Ecclestone. It covers a period from his early childhood right up to almost the current day. It is a gripping and enlightening read, which attempts to shed light on what makes Bernie the man he is.

Thursday 8 September 2011

Weekend in Motorsport (10/11 September 2011)

Morning Sportsfans,

Topping the bill for this weekend is The Le Mans Series & International Le Mans Cup at Silverstone. 6 Hours of proper racing, featuring some of the same vehicles that muscled their way around La Sarthe, for the Endurance Race.

F1 is back, after the summer holiday, while Truckosaurus (your usual motorsport blogger) is trekking up Mt. Kilimanjaro on his summer holiday, the F1 circus rocks in to Monza. One of the proper old circuits still left on the calendar, admittedly it's been a bit ruined over the past few years (thanks Max!!) but it is still the fastest circuit on the F1 calendar. There was a little controversy surrounding the tyres and cambers being ran at Francorchamps a couple of weeks ago, see the James Allen on F1 blog for great insight into the tyres and other F1 related ephemera. F1 is joined by GP2 and Porsche SuperCup.

NASCAR is at Richmond, sponsored by Wonderful Pistachios 400... I kid you not!

Super GT is at Fuji, from their site "A turmoil race means keep your eyes on GT-R fleet"

Videos of The Week
Graham Rahal vs Safety Truck IZOD Indycar... at the start of the race!! Le Mans Legend Henri Pescarolo finally got given back his team and produced a win at Le Castellet!! Henri, Henri, Henri! As F1 is at Monza, here is a superb video of the 1972 race, featuring Emo.

As we strive to give our users more choices and options we have made our App available here http://slideme.org/application/motorsport-calendar-free Some Android device owners don't have access to the Android Market and we felt that it was important to ensure that these owners were able to benefit from our App!

Friday 19 August 2011

Weekend in Motorsport (20/21 August 2011)

Morning Sportsfans,

Topping the bill for this week is The American Le Mans Series from the Road America circuit at Elkhart Lake in Wisconsin.

Former Bentley Boy Guy Smith seems to be topping the time sheets in practice in his Mazda engined Lola.

The race will be shown live on MotorsTV in Europe, on ABC in the States and online at espn3.com and on the ALMS website.

Another series that is pioneering online coverage is the SRO's European GT3 series, with GT1TV complementing MotorsTV and the Bloomberg news channels output. This weekend the series is debuting at the SlovakiaRing outside of Bratislava. Slovakia is not normally a country that we'd associate with motorsport, but a quick glance at a map shows the circuit is located neatly between the neighbouring capitals of Budapest and Vienna as well as being not a million miles from Brno across the border in the Czech Republic. Dull fact of the week: Slovakia builds more cars per head of population than any other nation due to manufacturers such as VW and Kia setting up new factories in the country since its entry to the EU.

Slovakia also has links to Skoda and this week saw EVO magazine's Richard Meaden taking a modified Octavia vRS to the Bonneville salt and hitting 214mph.

Videoes of The Week
A recent Gareth Jones on Speed podcast featured Gaz taking a few laps of Goodwood with the 2nd Nicest Man in Motorsport, Austin Kinsella in a Merc SLS. (The Nicest Man in Motorsport is, of course, Win Percy).

v 0.9.6 Now available from the Android Market

The App has been updated to include more circuit information. In addition the memory footprint of the Motorosport Calendar App has now been greatly reduced. In v 0.9 we started noticing that a small handful of users were getting App Errors due to memory and bitmap handling. The layout for 320x480 resolution devices was updated, to align it with the newer display of information.

If you do suffer an Android Error and are able to report it, please let us know the handset that you are using and Android OS version, as this helps us to troubleshoot problems raised.

Many thanks for the continued support, we are gaining new users every day! Work has commenced on updating the data for the forthcoming 2012 season, which will be added to the Free version of the App.

Friday 12 August 2011

Weekend in Motorsport (13/14 August 2011)

I trust we are all well.

First up this weekend is Grand-AM and NASCAR from Watkins Glen in upstate New York.

United Autosport's Mark Blundell talks about the event to SPEED tv's John Dagys:

And let's not forget, Blundell has a history of being Any Good in a sportscar:

As always there is a very strong British presence in the Indycar series in New Hampshire (state motto: Live Free or Die) with Testing Timesheet Topper Dario Franchitti being joined by part-season entrant the fragrant Pippa Mann and three other British drivers (Mike Conway, James Jakes and Alex Lloyd).

v 0.9 Now available from the Android Market

We've now added 120+ circuit maps to the App, so that when selecting a race event you can see what the circuit looks like. In addition to this information we also give the circuit length and a URL to the official website of the race circuit selected.

There will be a couple more updates and then we will create a Paid For version which will add more functionality to the existing free functionality. The Free version will continue to exist and will be updated, but may not gain all of the functionality of the Paid For version.

Please keep the feedback coming, it really helps to get a feeling for how the App is being used.

Weekend in Motorsport (6/7 August 2011)

Now then.

We'll begin this week with looking back at last week's action. An eventful Spa 24 Hours saw the pace setting McLaren suffering a Very Heavy Crash in the opening hour, leaving Audi to take victory from BMW.

The chaps from Ingolstadt kindly documented their weekend for those of us not lucky enough to have made it across the channel.

QUALIFYING
BEFORE THE RACE
THE RACE - PART 1
THE RACE - PART 2

This weekend's Stateside action brings us Indycar and ALMS from Mid-Ohio and NASCAR at Pocono, PA.

Here in the UK it's the return of the BTCC from their summer break. This week's race will be at the revamped Snetterton circuit in Norfolk. The MSC team attended the Lotus Festival at Snet earlier this year and can confirm that the new layout is very spectator friendly with a number of very large viewing mounds (including one that is probably the highest point in the whole county) giving an excellent view of the track.

The Honda Racing team have created a video of their BTCC exploits that will be release later this month to coincide with the Knockhill round, the home circuit of driver Gordon Sheddon. TRAILER

Whilst we're in a BTCC mood, I came across the following video from 1986 featuring Southampton Football Club's leading celebrity fan and former Radio One disc jockey and helicopter crasher Mike Smith.

a Morgan 3-Wheeler

...and Finally:

The excellent "SENNA" movie is now available to PRE-ORDER. If you haven't yet seen the film then you really should. The mixture of archive footage and the contrasting styles of Murray Walker's gentle english commentary versus the frenetic Portuguese of the Brazilian commentator make the story come alive for even the most cynical of motorsport fan.

Weekend in Motorsport (30/31 July 2011)

Ahoy MSCers,

This weekend's motorsport action focusses on the Ardennes and the Spa 24hrs.

The headline entries come from McLaren's three GT3 versions of the new MP4-12C which showed good pace as invitation entries to the recent British GT round at Spa.

Most established teams such as United Autosports have star names such as Mark Blundell, Johnny Herbert, Arie Luyendyk, Eddie Cheever and Stefan Johannson in 3 Audi R8s battling factory backed R8s driven by amongst others Mike Rockenfeller who was last seen with his R18 in pieces against the armco on the Mulsanne.

Photos of the event build up available from Endurance Info

F1, of course, continues its march around the globe, having been at the Nurburgring last weekend in the rain.

Just imagine if they had the bottle to run on the old north loop, it might look something like THIS

My other favourite video of the week was the one to accompany Dickie Meaden's EVO magazine article on testing the latest iteration of the Porsche 911 in South Africa

Finally, please keep us informed if you find any bugs or quirks with the MSC app. One of the advantages of the Android platform is the wide range of devices that can run the software so it is possible that some issues only affect certain types of phone or tablet or a specific version of Android.

0.8.8 now released!

An issue where the App Force Closed on device restart, or cold boot has now been resolved! No more errors, apologies that it's taken so long to resolve this issue.

v 0.8.7 Now available on the Android Market

The latest version of the App is 0.8.7.

This includes an updated tablet version, which provides a landscape view of the App. This version also supports increased resolution devices, up to 1280x800.

Minor bug fixes have been applied and some data has been updated, for instance the Britcar round at Donington Park which has now been cancelled.

We are continually striving towards updating the App, to improve it's use, function and form. Quite soon it should be completed, giving Event information which will include circuit maps of each circuit.

Sometimes, if upgrading from a significantly older version of the App, users may experience problems. In these circumstances we recommend clearing the cache of the App. In all cases this has resolved the issues.

Coming soon, calendar integration (paid for App only) and filtering by Month and Circuit!

We will be updating the App for the 2012 Motorsport calendar as dates are announced. This will be included in the free App.

If you like the App please tell others, if you don't like it, for whatever reason, please tell us! We are listening to user comments and integrating them where technically feasible.

v0.8.5 of TheMSC available on Android Market

The latest version of The MotorSport Calendar is now available on the Android Market.

Due to modifications to the application's internal database this update will clear any favourites users had stored, so these will have to be re-added.

This change, whilst inconvenient, will make the application more stable and allow future database changes to be made without impacted user's stored favourites.

On the good news front, the application now lists the popular Japanese SuperGT and Formula Nippon series.

Have a good weekend!
